LCP Capsules
-
Description:
LCP Capsules are soft gelatin 'snip-top' capsules containing 500mg of an oil blend which is rich in long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) and vitamin E. A food for special medical purposes. -
Indications and Prescribability:
LCP Capsules are designed for use in the dietary management of phenylketonuria and can be used in other inborn errors of metabolism requiring supplementary LCPUFA’s. The capsule should not be taken whole by children under 8yrs of age.
Phenylketonuria & Other IEM’s A lack of pre-formed long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) in the PKU diet may result in low erythrocyte and plasma levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Children supplemented with the LCP Capsules showed an increase in their DHA status in erythrocyte lipids, which was associated with an improvement in indices of visual function. The LCP Capsules have been formulated to contain a balanced blend of fatty acids from the n-6 and n-3 series to redress the imbalances seen in the plasma lipid profiles of children with PKU. -
Suggested Intake:
The quantity of LCP Capsules should be determined by a clinician or dietitian only and is dependent upon the age, bodyweight and medical condition of the patient. Agostoni et al suggest an intake of approximately 1 capsule/ 4 kg bodyweight/day.
