Sauces?

Hello all smile

I’m a particularly awkward PKUer in that I really don’t like tomato sauces.

Can anyone recommend sauces - either that I can make OR buy - that are tasty and low in protein but about as far away from tomato as you can get?

Thanks
Kate

You can cook your own sauce with anything vegetable or fruit.
For example, with onions.

You can use it like sauce or like garnish or like main course

ONION SAUCE
300 grs. of onions
50 grs of olive oil
20 grs. of sugar.

Put a saucepan on fire with the olive oil.
Add the onions.
Lid the saucepan during twenty minutes.
Stir among so cooking.
Add sugar and stir.
After, you can crush it.

PUMPKIN SAUCE (For four persons; main course)

1 kg of pumpkin
200 grs of onions
50 grs of olive oil
250 grs of graisin
Salt

Put a saucepan on fire with the olive oil.
Add onions, pumpkin cut in small square and salt.
Lid the saucepan during twenty five minutes.
Stir among so cooking.
Add the graisin, stir for a minute, and put out the fire.
If water isn´t reduced, you can put in the fire without lid.

Ask me, please. My English isn´t very good.

Wow these sauces sound delicious!

I’m going to try them this weekend. I guess the good thing about sauces is you can make lots and lots and just freeze them! I always prefer using my add-ins with thick sauces too, I know they don’t taste any different (in fact they don’t taste at all which I think is the point!), but you can really hide the add-ins in the sauce. Now I’m off to buy some pumpkin!

Thank you pkummm

Hi Kate,

My dietititian gave me the following options:

1. Bisto Parsley sauce ( 3.4g of protein in 100g).
2. Bisto white sauce ( 3.2g of protein in 100g).
3. Bisto chip shop curry. ( 3.4g of protein in 100g).

You should also comsider these as half an exchange.

Kate,

There are a number of sauces you can buy at the supermarket, from Chinese to Italian. I think there are too many to list here at the moment. The thing to do is check the nutritional information, just like Pippa has done. Some can go free, some will need to be an exchange. It does make life much easier and it means we can all eat the same meals.

GabbieX:
To list it here is very interesting for me.
In Spain we don´t use these sauces.
I´m sure that some of them we can buy in Spain.

I made the pumpkin sauce the other night and all I have to say is that it was delicious!! :o)

I also decided to ‘spice’ things up a little by adding a bit of chopped chilli and added some SnoPro and it turned into a lovely soup!

Going to try the onion sauce this week. What do you think it would be nice with?

Onion sauce is really tasty if you put on the pizza.
You can do pizza pastry at home.
- 200 ml Loprofin milk
- 50 ml olive oil
- salt
- 400 grs. Loprofin flour
- 1 baking powder packet
Heat up milk, olive oil, salt, and baking powder.
Add Loprofin Flour.
Knead it.
Put on the pizza crust fried tomatoes, oregano, onion sauce and that you like.
Excellent.

IMPORTANT:
If you like, you can freeze small pizzas wrapped in baking paper.
When you like use it, put one pizza in oven.

Bisto is a brand… they do gravy and various sauces including white sauce, cheese and chip shop curry. They’re generally very low in phe and not half bas tasting either!

Please, is “Bisto” a brand specialized in PKU food or a common brand?
Thank you.

Pkummm

Bisto is a brand of powdered sauces here in the UK, they’re not a PKU food. I’m not sure if you’ll have them in Spain as you don’t have a lot a gravy or curry sauces with your foods as far as I know. At least I’ve never seen them when I’ve been on holiday there
